Programs in Southeast Asia Studies
General
Information
The University of California, Berkeley has a long tradition of scholarship on Southeast Asia. Degree programs that support specialization in Southeast Asian Studies are offered through the Department of South and Southeast Studies and the Group in Asian Studies. The Group in Asian Studies also offers joint degree programs with Boalt Law School and the School of Journalism.
Many Ph.D. programs, such as those in History, Anthropology, Music and Political Science, support a concentration on Southeast Asia within the major field. The Joint Medical Program, a five-year M.S./M.D. degree program, offered through Berkeley's School of Public Health and the UC San Francisco School of Medicine, allows students to pursue an area studies focus on Southeast Asia for the M.S. degree. The College of Environmental Design and the College of Natural Resources also have degree concentration options that support area studies, including a possible focus on Southeast Asia.
Courses with Southeast Asia Content
Each semester, the Center for Southeast Asia Studies compiles a list of selected courses, which focus on the region and are being offered by affiliated faculty members.
Department of South and Southeast Asian Studies
The Department offers programs for both undergraduate and graduate instruction and research in the languages, cultures and civilizations of South and Southeast Asia from the most ancient period to the present. Language instruction through the intermediate level in Southeast Asian languages includes Khmer, Malay/Indonesian, Tagalog, Thai, and Vietnamese. These language courses are offered annually at Berkeley. Indonesian, Khmer and Vietnamese are regularly scheduled through the advanced level.
Also, there are classes in the areas of literature, philosophy and religion, and general cross-disciplinary studies of the civilizations of South and Southeast Asia. The Department maintains a balance between ancient and modern studies, and between linguistic and cultural disciplines. Programs of study thus can be devised to fit the needs of students with a wide range of interests. Opportunities exist for a limited number of students to participate in language training programs in the field. The Department's various programs are enriched by the resources of the Center for South Asia Studies and the Center for Southeast Asian Studies.
Group in Asian Studies
The Group in Asian Studies administers an interdisciplinary program leading to the A.B., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees, with the support of the International and Area Studies Teaching Program and the Institute of East Asian Studies. These degree programs cut across conventional disciplinary lines and emphasize a basic core of knowledge concerning one particular geographic area of Asia. Within this core, which requires course work in at least two departments and reading knowledge of one or more Asian languages, students can plan an individual program accommodating particular interests and approaches.
