Title VI Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships

The Title VI Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowship is awarded on an annual competitive basis to incoming and continuing graduate students. This fellowship provides for tuition fees and a living stipend. Students must study a Southeast Asian language and undertake area studies course work that supports their research program. Fellowships are awarded for both the academic year and summer. The Center administers the selection process for the FLAS fellowships, while the Berkeley Graduate Division disburses the funds. A faculty committee reviews graduate student applications submitted in February and awards are normally announced in May. FLAS competitions are limited to permanent residents or U.S. citizens.

CSEAS travel & research grants

The Center for Southeast Asia Studies manages a small grants program for UC Berkeley graduate students who are pursuing humanities or social science research relating to Vietnam, Cambodia or Laos. Travel grants up to $500 are available during the academic year to students who will be presenting papers at academic conferences or who need to travel to particular sites or libraries for research purposes. Summer research grants up to $2,000 may be used for research funds, exploratory site research or acquisition of special research tools or skills. Grant awards are based both on the scholarly merit of the applications and the needs of the applicants. The program carries no limitation as to the level, departmental affiliation, or citizenship of the applicant. Applicants with a record of satisfactory progress in their degree programs will be given priority. Recipients are expected to remain enrolled in the university during the term of their research project. Deadlines for applications are announced in the fall.

Pacific Rim Research Program

The University of California Pacific Rim Research Program is a competitive grants program primarily supporting collaborative research by UC faculty and graduate students and their colleagues in other institutions.
