Language Study

General Information

At Berkeley, the Department of South and Southeast Asian Studies offers language instruction in Khmer, Indonesian, Tagalog, Thai, and Vietnamese. Indonesian and Vietnamese are offered through the advanced level.

Opportunities for intensive language study or for the study of Southeast Asian languages not offered at Berkeley are available through other programs and institutes in the U.S. and overseas.

Southeast Asian Studies Summer Institute
The Southeast Asia Summer Studies Institute at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is an intensive eight-week summer language program open to undergraduates, graduate students and professionals. It offers language instruction in nine Southeast Asian languages through the advanced level, including heritage learner courses for Hmong, Lao and Khmer. Berkeley is one of twelve universities across the United States that support SEASSI with summer Foreign Language Area Scholarship funds directed to the SEASSI fellowship pool.

Advanced Language Study in Southeast Asia

Berkeley is also a member of the university consortia that support summer intensive advanced-level language programs for Filipino, Indonesian, Thai, Khmer and Vietnamese in Southeast Asia.
