Outreach
to the Public and the K-12 Initiative

Immigration, family relationships, trade and political relations
have greatly increased the level of interest in Southeast Asia throughout
the state of California. Southeast Asia, once thought to be remote
and exotic, has emerged instead as an important part of the world
with which Californians have growing contact. Awareness of the peoples
and cultures of Southeast Asia has primarily been stimulated by
changing patterns of immigration. Filipino, Vietnamese, Cambodian,
Laotian and Thai communities now number in the hundreds of thousands
throughout all regions of California.
As part of its Title VI mission, the Center for Southeast Asia Studies
sponsors a wide array of outreach programs for both the general
public and public school communities. To help meet the growing demand
from the diaspora communities for relevant information about this
vital region of the world, the Center has participated in a range
of outreach programs through its public lectures and annual conference.
Through the Office of Resources in International and Area Studies
(ORIAS), the Center
initiates yearlong topical seminars, in-service training, curriculum
development projects and summer workshops for K-12 teachers and
community college faculty.
Schools and
other public institutions wishing to contract with the Center for
outreach services should directly contact us by phone (510) 642-3609
or FAX (510) 643-7062. Members of the general public are always
welcome at Center lectures and conferences and should feel free
to call for more information.
